Colchester United could play one of their home matches at Ipswich Town's Portman Road ground early next season.
The U's new Cuckoo Farm stadium, due to be completed by mid-July, needs to hold a couple of safety events before it can host any home games.
A potential problem could arise if they are drawn at home in the first round of the Carling Cup before that date.
BBC Essex understands one option is to play it at Ipswich's ground, but talks are at an early stage.
One other option they are looking into is switching the tie to their opponent's ground.
The Essex club have already been given permission to play their first match of the new league season away, so their opening match at the new ground will be on 16 August.
