Hard-up Clyde release unlucky 13

Clyde

Hard-up Clyde have released 13 players because of the club's troublesome finances and are poised to appoint an unpaid director of football.

A statement said: "The club will not be in a position financially to offer the players who have reached the end of their current deals new contracts."

Strikers Robbie Winters and Gary McSwegan and defender Neil McGregor are the highest-profile departures.

Goalkeepers Peter Cherrie and David Hutton are also leaving Broadwood.

Midfielders Gregory Tade, Marvyn Wilson, Stephen Connolly, David McGowan and Jordan Murch and strikers Scott Gemmill and Craig O'Reilly have also not been offered new terms.

Defender Chris Higgins has already signed for First Division outfit Dunfermline Athletic after leaving Clyde.

And Tony Stevenson has returned to Hamilton Accies at the end of his loan spell with the Cumbernauld club.

The director of football will be co-opted on to the board and have strategic responsibility for all football activities at the club

Clyde chairman Ian Letham

Clyde came close to going into administration near the end of the season following the late payment of rent to Broadwood Stadium's local authority owners.

An agreement was reached, but it failed to prevent the club being relegated from Division One.

However, Clyde chairman Ian Letham told the club's website that they are still looking to appoint a director of football.

"The post will not be a paid position, but the appointment will be an individual who is experienced in football and recognised within the game," he said.

"The person will be co-opted on to the board and have strategic responsibility for all football activities at the club.

"By reporting to the rest of the directors, the person will also provide a crucial link between what happens on the pitch and off it.

"It is a position that we hope to fill soon, but it is more important that we get the right person to strengthen the board."
