Downes has made 181 appearances for Chesterfield
Chesterfield defender Aaron Downes will miss the rest of the season after suffering cruciate ligament damage in his knee for the second time in a year.
The 24-year-old Australian, who has made seven League Two appearances since returning to action in January, will again need surgery.
Manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It's a massive blow.
"The lad's worked really hard to get back playing and it's a shame but I know he'll come back."
