Chester appoint Wadsworth as boss

Mick Wadsworth has been appointed as the new manager of Chester City.

He is Chester owner Stephen Vaughan's ninth appointment in less than eight years, succeeding Mark Wright, whose third spell in charge ended last week.

The much-travelled 58-year-old former Newcastle United assistant manager, hopes he can turn the club's fortunes around this season.

"It's a tough situation but I find that exciting. I can't wait to get started," Wadsworth told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"The challenge set by the directors here is to improve the status of the football club as quickly as possible."

Wadsworth, whose last job was at Gretna when they folded in 2008, was due to take up a position in charge of a top flight outfit in Greece.

But he has been lured back to English football to take on the task of trying to lead relegated Chester (who will start the season with a 10-point handicap) back into the Football League.

"It's an opportunity to be back in football and doing what I like doing best and that's coaching," said Wadsworth.

"The whole thing appeals because it's such a touchy situation and a difficult situation.

"It's a team that I've been up against many times over the years - I've been here with lots of teams.

"I've always liked coming here and it's a fantastic area as well. One of the nicest parts of the country - there is no doubt about that."

Barnsley-born Wadsworth enjoyed his best days at Carlisle, who he led to promotion from Division Three in 1995.

But he has also managed Scarborough, Colchester, Oldham and Huddersfield Town.

Wadsworth has also twice managed abroad, first with Portuguese side Beira-Mar, as well as a short spell in charge of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
