Chester job attracts big interest

Chester City

Chester City owner Stephen Vaughan has revealed that there is strong interest in the managerial vacancy at the Deva.

City are on the hunt for a new manager following the departure of Mark Wright earlier this week.

"There has been quite a mixture of different candidates," said Vaughan, "some experienced and some up and coming managers.

"I know mistakes have been made in the past and that we now have to make an appointment that is needed."

Vaughan has made eight managerial appointments in less than eight years since buying the club in October 2001.

Steve Mungall, Ian Rush, Keith Curle, Bobby Williamson and Simon Davies have all failed to last more than 10 months in an era dominated by Wright's three spells in charge.

One obvious contender is former Tranmere Rovers manager Ronnie Moore, surprisingly shown the door at Prenton Park earlier this month after getting within 90 seconds of the League One play-offs.

"I haven't applied for the Chester job and nobody has approached me," he told the Chester Chronicle.

"But, if somebody wants to call me to have a chat then you can never say never. You've always got to keep your options open.

"You can never rule anything out in football.

"Nothing surprises me. I would never have thought I would be out of work when not too long ago I was 90 seconds away from getting Tranmere into the play-offs."

Vaughan is adamant that he will not be rushed into making a decision as he tries to lift the uncertainty around the club following relegation to the Blue Square Premier and City's brief spell in financial administration earlier this summer.

"The deadline to appoint a new manager will set itself," Vaughan told the Chester Evening Leader. "But the sooner we appoint a new manager then he can confirm to us where he can get us this season.

"Fifth place is definitely our minimum requirement."
