Chester close in on new co-owner

Chester City

League Two strugglers Chester City are confident of unveiling a new co-owner in the next week.

Following a meeting on Thursday night, Wirral-based solicitor Ian Anderson, who is handling the deal, revealed that an announcement is close.

"We have had a number of meetings with the prospective new investor," Anderson told the Liverpool Daily Post.

"We hope all the relevant documentation is signed and sealed early next week and we can unveil our new co-owner."

Anderson added: "It is no secret that we have been searching for another partner for months, and now thankfully our search would appear to be over."

Chester owner Stephen Vaughan stood down as chairman in December 2007 - but has stayed at the helm.

And, backed by a Liverpool-based property developer, he announced plans for a multi-million pound reconstruction of City's 16-year-old Deva Stadium home in September.

But Vaughan put the club up for sale in November in response to the current poor economic climate.

Attendance figures at the Deva Stadium, which were already among the lowest in League Two last season at an average 2,479, have slumped this season to 1,820.

In 17 home games this season, City, 21st in League football's bottom tier, have only topped the 2,000-mark four times.
