Cheltenham Town's Mark Yates eyes transfer market value

Cheltenham Town boss Mark Yates says he wants to get value for money as he bids to bolster his squad this summer.

Yates refused to be drawn on rumours linking him with former loanee Robin Shroot and Oxford striker Jack Midson.

But he told BBC Gloucestershire: "We are seeing what we can get for the best possible price.

"I've got a bit of a budget in terms of players' wages and I've got make sure everyone's happy with what I'm trying to bring in."

Shroot, 23, scored once in 10 appearances during a loan spell from Birmingham in 2010-11, while 27-year-old Midson scored three of his season's eight League Two goals against Cheltenham for parent club Oxford and while on loan at Southend.

Midson, who made his name in the Blue Square Premier with Histon, is leaving the U's this summer and has said he will sign for an unnamed club when he returns from holiday after already verbally agreeing terms.

He also revealed on Twitter that he had spoken to Yates but had not been offered a deal by the Robins.

Yates added: "Robin was mentioned briefly. He was on a lot of money at Birmingham last season.

"The good thing with him is he can play in a couple of positions, and while he will want to be playing, he wouldn't be on anywhere near that money with us.

"Jack is one that has been on the agenda for a couple of months now."

Yates did confirm the retention of midfielder David Bird was virtually agreed and would be concluded when the player returns from holiday.

Former fitness guru Jason Murphy is also set to return to the club, having previously been with Cheltenham when John Ward and Keith Downing were in charge.
