Passion is why I am at Cheltenham Town - David Bird

Cheltenham Town midfielder David Bird says his passion for the club is the reason he is still there and on the verge of equalling a club record.

The 25-year-old needs one more game to equal Jamie Victory's club record of 258 Football League appearances.

"I haven't been here nine years for no reason - I want to be here, I want to play football, I want to be around this club," Bird told BBC Gloucestershire.

"I'm trying hard to get back in to the team, like I did on Tuesday night."

He added: "I just want to stay in the team."

Born in Gloucestershire, Bird joined Cheltenham as a 17-year-old from non-league Cinderford Town in 2002, having made his debut for his hometown club aged just 15.

He has not been a regular so far in the 2010-11 season and mostly his appearances have been restricted to right-back, but he was restored to his favoured midfield role for the 1-1 draw at home to Oxford United.

He will equal Victory's record if he plays at Aldershot on Saturday.

"I obviously want to stay in the team and get a lot more [games]," he said.

"Jamie had a very good record here and it's good to be up there with him."

"When I first came here he'd been in the team a while and got a lot of non-league games and league games."
