Cheltenham Town finances encourage Paul Baker

Cheltenham Town chairman Paul Baker says the club will approach next season on a firmer financial footing.

The Robins have struggled for the last 18 months, but off the field Baker says they are heading along the right lines.

He told BBC Gloucestershire: "We'll be repaying some debt this year and we have got our house in order.

"It's important we don't get ourselves into a difficult debt situation and I think other clubs have far, far more debt than we've ever got."

Baker admitted the cold weather last winter, which meant the Robins had only three home games in 10 weeks, put pressure on the club's cash flow, but he was pleased with the overall outcome for the season.

We're almost on a mission to find out as much we can to find out what other clubs are doing and what their wage bill is

"We're not going to be far away from breaking even, which considering we had an horrendous previous year will be a remarkable result," he said.

"We've actually kept in budget in terms of expenditure, but we haven't generated as much revenue as we'd hoped, largely because of attendances."

Cheltenham's director will meet manager Mark Yates on Friday to discuss the playing budget for next season, and Baker says that is where networking around the league on match days really pays off.

"We're almost on a mission in those situations to find out as much we can to find out what other clubs are doing and what their wage bill is," he said.

"As a club, we've gather a quite a lot of good information about what budgets are at other clubs."
