Cheltenham Town have turned down a substantial offer from an unnamed League club for Steven Gillespie.
Had the transfer gone through it would have set a new record for the League One club.
The 23-year-old Liverpudlian striker scored 16 goals in 38 appearances last season for the Whaddon Road club.
Chairman Paul Baker told Cheltenham's website: "Whilst it was a good offer we want to do everything we can to keep our best players."
Baker, who will not be naming the club concerned out of courtesy to them, added: "We were also mindful that Steven would prove a difficult player to replace even with a transfer fee at our disposal."
