Chelsea set to seal Robinho deal

Robinho played a key role as Real won the Spanish title last season

Chelsea are close to signing Real Madrid forward Robinho, according to Blues chief executive Peter Kenyon.

"Everybody expected negotiations to go close to the wire and that's what it will do but we're confident it will happen," he told BBC London 94.9.

"There are no hitches, it's just a lengthy process."

Reports have suggested that the 24-year-old Brazil international, who is contracted to Real until 2010, could cost the Blues about 30m.

His agent Wagner Ribeiro told BBC Radio 5 Live the deal could be completed in the next two days which may mean Robinho would be available for Chelsea's match against London rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

Real are thought to be waiting to conclude a deal for Villareal's Spanish international Santi Carzola before releasing Robinho for transfer.

Kenyon added that AC Milan forward Kaka, who the Blues have also been linked with, would not be joining his compatriot at Stamford Bridge.

"Everybody identifies Kaka as one of the world's best players," said the Chelsea chief executive.

"All I can say it's flattering to be associated with the player, but there won't be anything happening this window or this season."

He added: "Our manager Luiz Felipe Scolari identified a couple of players he wanted, one was Deco, we've seen the impact he has made, and the other was Robinho. It's important we supported Luiz."

Former Brazil national team coach Scolari said he would not play a part in overseeing the Robinho deal.

"This is a situation for our board," said the 59-year-old.

"If Robinho arrives or doesn't arrive, it's OK. He's a very good player but I have fantastic players here. My work is on the pitch and nothing more."

The forward made known his desire to play for Chelsea after the club's sporting director Frank Arnesen was reported to have met his agent Ribeiro in June, once it was announced Scolari would be taking charge of the Blues.

At the time Real were said to have wanted to sell Robinho in order to help fund a bid for Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, which reportedly upset Robinho.

But the diminutive Brazilian then also revealed his desire to play for the new Blues coach.

"It would be a dream for me to work with Luiz Felipe Scolari, who is one of the best coaches in the world," he said.

"I have always spoken highly of him and he has always spoken very highly of me, since well before he was at Chelsea."

However, with United refusing to sell Ronaldo, Real were then forced to try to hang on to Robinho, who scored 11 goals in 32 games to help them to the league title last season.

I hope the directors reach an agreement with Chelsea to resolve my situation as quickly as possible

But after refusing to release him to play for Brazil at the Olympics, Robinho once again reiterated his longing to leave the Bernabeu.

"I want to leave and I have got the character to tell the press that I'm not aiming to stay at Real," he said.

"It isn't because of money, it is simply because I want to leave. My personal aim is to be the best player in the world and that isn't going to be possible at Real Madrid.

"I've played three seasons at Real Madrid and have given everything.

"I think my period at Real Madrid has come to an end. I hope the directors reach an agreement with Chelsea to resolve my situation as quickly as possible."

The Primera Liga club eventually changed their tack last week by issuing a statement declaring they would not keep Robinho "against his wishes".

"As a result we have no alternative but to accept his unilateral decision to rescind his contract," the statement added.
