Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho believes Dynamo Moscow's Portuguese midfielder Maniche will adapt quickly to life in England if he joins the London club.
The 28-year-old is set to sign on loan until the end of the season, when Chelsea will have a £5m option to buy.
"I am looking for a player who knows me deeply and would adapt with a click," said Mourinho, who coached Maniche at both Benfica and Porto.
"Maniche would be the final piece to give stability in a key sector."
Mourinho added that talks between Dynamo and Chelsea over the transfer are still in progress.
"We are seeking to establish agreeable conditions for all the parties involved," said the Chelsea manager.
"I wait tranquilly but I don't hide the fact that I want Maniche and Maniche could become a historic player in my career, the only one to play under me at three different clubs: Benfica, Porto and Chelsea."
Mourinho is concerned Chelsea are short in midfield after the sale of Tiago Mendes to Lyon and the loan of Alexei Smertin to Charlton as well as Jiri Jarosik to Birmingham in the summer.
Chelsea will also lose Ghana midfielder Michael Essien next month as he takes part in the African Nations Cup in Egypt.
Maniche is keen to work with Mourinho again.
The Portugal international said last year: "He's the best coach I've worked under.
"He became more of a friend than a boss and I've never seen that kind of closeness from another coach in all the years I've been a footballer."
