Charlton have refused to release China captain Zheng Zhi to play for his country later this month.
Zheng has become an increasingly important player for Charlton
The midfielder was called up for a World Cup qualifying double-header against Burma on 21 and 28 October.
However, the Addicks will not let him travel because the matches fall outside Fifa's window for international games.
"I apologise to the Chinese federation, but I have made the decision to keep him here," Charlton manager Alan Pardew told his club's website.
"If he were to travel, he would miss our games against Wolves, Plymouth and QPR because the fixtures fall outside of the international window.
"I know Zizi is an important player for his country, but he is also important for us.
"I am sure that China will be able to get the results they need from the two games without him."
Zheng has made nine first-team appearances for Charlton this season, following a successful loan spell last term.
