Smertin, 30, is on a season-long loan from Chelsea, and has impressed in Charlton's sound start to the season.
Murphy told Charlton's website: "He could be the star man for us, a real influence, especially when things aren't going well.
"It's not until you play with somebody day in, day out, that you appreciate their strengths."
