Charlton are set to complete the 3m signing of Portuguese defender Jorge Costa.

The FC Porto defender has been at The Valley since joining the Addicks on a five-month loan spell in December, subject to a 4m permanent transfer.

Costa's prime motive in joining Charlton was to prove he was worth a place in Portugal's World Cup squad afer falling out with Porto.

Jorge has been absolutely superb since he came to England
Charlton manager Alan Curbishley

But the 30-year-old impressed Charlton boss Alan Curbishley enough during the loan spell to sign him on a permanent basis.

Curbishley negotiated a reduction in Porto's original asking price, forcing them down to 3m.

Curbishley said: "I have spoken to Porto and they have said they are willing to let him go for less than the 4m they were asking for him whe we first spoke back in December.

"Jorge has been absolutely superb since he came to England.

"He has shown he is more than capable of holding his own in the Premiership."
