Charlton Athletic have signed Tottenham's England Under-21 defender Luke Young.

The 22-year-old crosses London in a 3m four-year deal and will immediately fly out to join his new team-mates on the club's Scandinavian tour.

The fee could increase to 4m, with Charlton agreeing to pay further sums of 250,000 at the end of each of the next four seasons dependent on them retaining Premiership status.

"Given that we are also spending 9m on The Valley's new North Stand I feel that this latest transfer serves to underline the scale of our ambitions for the club," chairman Richard Murray said.

Young came through the youth ranks at White Hart Lane and featured for Spurs in both the centre of defence and as a full-back, making 77 senior appearances.

He is Charlton's third major signing of the summer, following the acquisitions of strikers Jason Euell and Shaun Bartlett for 4.75m and 2m respectively.
