Celtic confirm partnership with Santos Laguna

Celtic have confirmed a partnership with Mexican club Santos Laguna that could lead to them eventually swapping first-team players.

Chief executive Peter Lawwell told the Celtic website: "We have developed an excellent relationship already with Santos Laguna.

"It is a magnificent football club, run by great people.

"It is a club with a tremendous pedigree and one whose ethos is closely aligned to our own."

Celtic say "the clubs will transfer knowledge and work positively together in a number of areas, including coaching, sports science, player development and technical analysis".

"Like Celtic, Santos Laguna is much more than a football club, an organisation with a very strong social and community dimension but also a very professional club with a desire for success," said Lawwell.

"We are sure the professionalism, spirit, enthusiasm and knowledge of Santos Laguna will be a real asset to Celtic.

We look forward to making history together and inspiring many with our essence and the success of both our teams being added to each other

"As we have already seen from our work in the USA, Japan, Korea, India and elsewhere, we have been very successful in promoting Celtic to a wider audience.

"Celtic is fortunate to have many millions of fans worldwide and already we have many new fans in Mexico.

"Clearly, this work has also assisted in the promotion of Scottish football and the Scottish Premier League and we are sure this new partnership in Mexico will again open up our game to a whole new and substantial audience."

Formed in 1982, Santos play in a strip similar to Celtic's - green and white hoops.

As well as the potential for pre-season tours, Celtic say the two clubs will engage in charitable activities "to assist a range of people in need across Scotland, Mexico and beyond".

Santos president Alejandro Irarragorri added: "The greatness of the 'Green and Blanco' project is that through commitment, work, passion and the soul-mate spirit of Celtic and Santos, we will change the way and history of partnerships in the football industry, creating values for both clubs and to our fans by taking a step into globalization.

"We look forward to making history together and inspiring many with our essence and the success of both our teams being added to each other."
