Celtic manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed that Scott Brown will captain the side when fit to play.

The 24-year-old has just returned to fitness and took the skipper's armband from Glenn Loovens when he came on as a substitute against Kilmarnock.

Brown takes over from Stephen McManus, who has joined Middlesbrough on loan.

"At this stage in his career, the responsibility will be good for him," said Mowbray, who previously worked with Brown at Hibernian.

''He has the potential for flare-ups; that's his personality. Since the day I walked into Hibs I could understand his personality.

''When Scott plays he'll lead the team.

''He wants to win and push himself to win. That needs tempering, of course, but you shouldn't be criticising him for the fire in his belly."

The Scotland cap has featured 12 times for Celtic this term and last season won the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award.

In December, Celtic strenuously denied newspaper speculation that Brown had been told the club were planning to sell him during the January transfer window.

Brown played 60 minutes and scored in a 3-1 friendly win over Drogheda on Wednesday - 24 hours after making his first-team comeback at Rugby Park - and could feature in Celtic's Scottish Cup fifth-round clash against Dunfermline at East End Park on Sunday.

The Fife-born midfielder began his career at Easter Road before moving to Glasgow in the summer of 2007, when Celtic beat off competition from a number of clubs, including Rangers, to secure his signature for a fee of £4.4m - the largest transfer fee exchanged between two Scottish clubs.
