Brown and Maloney face weeks out

Celtic midfielder Scott Brown

Celtic will be without Scott Brown and Shaun Maloney for up to eight weeks because of persistent injury problems.

Brown will have a second operation on his troublesome ankle in Amsterdam next week, while Maloney needs rest to ease tendonitis in his heel.

"Scott will have a minor procedure which will hopefully clear up his problem. Ultimately we need to get it sorted," said Celtic boss Tony Mowbray.

"There will be no surgery for Shaun, just a course of injections."

Tony Mowbray admitted concern last week over the fitness of £4.4m Scotland star Brown and hinted that the player may need an extended period on the sidelines.

"The specialist in Amsterdam who is overseeing Scott is looking at him being out for six to eight weeks," said Mowbray.

"Maloney is also out for the same length of time. He has played with discomfort and he needs to sort it out now."

Brown, who was voted last season's player of the year by his fellow professionals, had an ankle operation in the summer.

However, he has struggled to regain full fitness and also visited a specialist in London in October before pulling out of Scotland's friendly in Japan.

He has not featured for Celtic since the 1-0 Europa League defeat at home by Hamburg on 22 October.

Maloney's last match was the 1-0 Co-operative Insurance Cup defeat by Hearts the following week, when he was replaced at half-time.

Meanwhile, Honduran international Osman Chavez will have another week's trial at the club to prove himself worthy of a contract.

The 25-year-old defender also spent time during the summer on trial with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
