Caldwell's current deal with Celtic runs until next summer
Celtic manager Tony Mowbray is confident he can persuade defender Gary Caldwell to agree a new extended deal.
The 27-year-old, who worked with Mowbray at Hibernian, is contracted to the Glasgow club until next summer.
"I've already had a conversation with Gary and I'll try to pick up the reigns on that," explained Mowbray.
"It's not something I've gone into in depth yet but I would like to think that I've got a very strong relationship with Gary Caldwell."
Caldwell, capped 33 times for Scotland, was last term voted player of the year by both the Scottish Football Writers' Association and the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League.
Mowbray has already said that he will review the captaincy, currently held by the injured Stephen McManus, and Caldwell is certain to be a candidate.
Scott McDonald will wear the armband for Sunday's friendly against Brisbane Roar in his native Australia.
