Celtic wanting Caldwell extension

Gary Caldwell has fun in training
Caldwell will face his former club Hibernian on Saturday

Celtic have confirmed that they are in talks with Scotland defender Gary Caldwell about extending his contract with the Glasgow club.

The Scottish champions have already triggered a one-year option clause in the 26-year-old's present deal.

And manager Gordon Strachan said: "I spoke to Gary during the week.

"He knows how much we want him here and talks will continue to try and secure a longer contract. He's been sensational for us since he's been here."

Caldwell, who began his career with Newcastle United, joined Celtic in summer 2006 after two years with Hibernian.

"Gary is intelligent and, when I'm coaching players, he listens to everything," said Strachan.

I wouldn't think we would be appealing (against Artur Boruc's fine)

"Sometimes one or two players switch off from coaching when it doesn't involve them whatsoever.

"As a matter of fact, they sometimes switch off when it does involve them.

"But Gary takes everything in and, when we ask him to play in a different position, like he did the other night at Old Trafford then it's not a problem to him because he understands football."

Central defender Caldwell played as a defensive midfielder against Manchester United in the 3-0 Champions League defeat at Old Trafford.

He has also fulfilled that role with Scotland and played at right-back for club and country.

Meanwhile, Strachan said that Celtic were unlikely to appeal the 500 fine given to goalkeeper Artur Boruc by the Scottish FA for a gesture made towards Rangers supporters in the last Old Firm derby.

"He has to take it," he said. "That's the decision and we get on with it.

"I speak to all the players about their conduct at different times but not this morning. I was too busy this morning.

"I wouldn't think we would be appealing."
