Injury setback for Celtic striker

Vennegoor of Hesselink receives treatment for his injury

Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink will miss next week's Champions League match with Manchester United because of a groin injury.

The Dutchman, who will also be absent for Saturday's trip to Inverness, was substituted early in Celtic's most recent league match against Hamilton.

Manager Gordon Strachan said: "He will not be ready for a while yet."

Vennegoor of Hesselink is also likely to miss the return against United at Celtic Park on 5 November.

Meanwhile, the Celtic boss expects his players to return from international duty unscathed.

Georgios Samaras, Shunsuke Nakamura, Scott McDonald, Artur Boruc and Aiden McGeady have all played overseas matches during the past week.

"Sammy, Naka, Scott and Artur are not back yet," added Strachan.

"But I've had no calls saying anything untoward has happened to them - they seem to be okay.

"The Scottish guys have come back and been fantastic. This week's training has been terrific."

The Celtic manager has praised midfielder Scott Brown for the versatility he has shown this season.

"Scott is now in a state of mind where he can play in any midfield position," said Strachan.

"For a while, he played in a role that he'd done through all his years. But then he had to change it to a different style of football.

"He now knows where he should be in conjunction with the ball. That's good for him because, if he knows where the ball is going to be, it makes the game easier.

"He's now got a lot more his locker. Scott has football ability and the fitness which allows him to move into different positions."
