Celtic first encounter Villarreal
The Celtic team to face Barcelona in March 2004, Joos Valgaeren is downbeat as Villarreal celebrate and Josico tackles Henrik Larsson.

Seven points from six matches against Bayern Munich, Lyon and Anderlecht was insufficient to take Celtic into the last 16 of the 2003/04 Champions League.

Instead, Celtic entered the Uefa Cup and in the fourth round met Barcelona.

Alan Thompson's goal gave Celtic a famous 1-0 victory over their illustrious guests in Glasgow and provided the team with the belief that they could progress.

Celtic's young players, goalkeeper David Marshall and defender John Kennedy, were outstanding in the Nou Camp and the Scots held on for a 0-0 draw to knock the Catalans out.

The dream of appearing in consecutive Uefa Cup finals died in Villarreal as the Yellow Submarine improved on their 1-1 scoreline from the first leg by beating Celtic 2-0 to reach the semi-final.

It was Henrik Larsson's last game in Europe for the club.
