Strachan said the Swiss striker was on Celtic's radar
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has confirmed he is interested in signing Switzerland and Borussia Dortmund forward Alexander Frei.
Strachan, who is part of the BBC Sport team covering Euro 2008, said: "Alexander will know that 18 months ago we enquired about him.
"Dortmund didn't want to sell him and the price was a bit steep. But he's still on our radar."
Frei, 28, said he was aware of Celtic's interest and they should contact him.
Strachan added: "He's still on our radar, still a good player, but we have a few. It's a maybe."
The striker, who will miss the remainder of Euro 2008 with a knee injury, said Celtic have been tracking him for a number of years.
"Apparently Celtic were in for me in 2004 and 2006, now they want me again in 2008," he said.
"No-one has ever put an offer on the table. If they want me they can phone. Otherwise, I don't want to talk about it."
The Swiss captain is out for at least six weeks after suffering a partially ruptured left knee ligament in the 1-0 defeat by Czech Republic in their opening Euro 2008 fixture.
