Carlisle United sign Bohemians striker Patrick Madden

Carlisle United

Carlisle United have signed striker Patrick Madden from League of Ireland side Bohemians for an undisclosed fee.

The 20-year-old Republic of Ireland under-23 forward has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal at Brunton Park, subject to international clearance.

"Patrick has an excellent reputation and he comes to us highly recommended," boss Greg Abbott told the club website.

"We've had him watched and he is a striker who likes to be involved, and who can also use the ball."

Madden added: "We think he'll fit in with the way that we want to play the game and he has the type of attitude that will make him an asset to the squad.

He'll provide competition for places in a key area

"He has done well with the Bohs and he sees this is an opportunity to come over here and make a mark.

"We need players with that drive and hunger. He'll provide competition for places in a key area and, hopefully, he'll also chip in with a few goals. We're really looking forward to working with him."

Madden, who will wear the number 19 shirt, helped the Gypsies to a second place finish in the League of Ireland last season.

He will not be available for Carlisle's League One match against Huddersfield on Tuesday.

Meanwhile the Cumbrians have also parted company with defender Tony Kane by mutual consent.

The 23-year-old joined Carlisle from Blackburn in July 2009 after a successful loan spell at Brunton Park, and made 15 appearances in total.
