Start is crucial, says Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott

Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott believes the opening matches of the League One season will dictate their fortunes for the rest of the campaign.

The Cumbrians welcome Brentford in Saturday's opener and Abbott sees a good result as imperative to their hopes of success.

"If we get off to a flying start and confidence is high we'll be alright," Abbott told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"If we get off to a bad start and feel the pressure it could be a tough year."

Under Abbott's guidance, Carlisle finished 11th in League One last season and reached the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final, losing 4-1 to Southampton.

Meanwhile Carlisle have been boosted by the pre-season form of striker Gary Madine, with a goal and a string of impressive displays for the first-team.

He wants to score goals, he wants to contribute, he wants to work hard and he's improving all the time

The Gateshead-born centre forward netted four goals in 20 league games for the club either side of loan spells at Coventry City and Chesterfield last term.

But Abbott is heartened by the all-round progress made by Madine during the summer.

"We work with Gary all the time because we think he's going to be a good player," Abbott revealed.

"He wants to score goals, he wants to contribute, he wants to work hard and he's improving all the time."

"He's only 19, he's going to get better and better as his attitude gets better. He's a number nine, he's a centre-forward type player, he's got to score goals and that's the key.

"We just need to see him continuing the good work he's doing at the moment."
