Carlisle United have completed the signing of midfielder Jeff Smith from League One rivals Port Vale for 60,000, reports BBC Radio Cumbria.

The 26-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Born in Middlesbrough, Smith began his career at non-league side Bishop Auckland before joining Bolton.

He was loaned out to Macclesfield, Scunthorpe, Rochdale and Preston before joining Vale in 2004, where he made over 100 league and cup appearances.
