Cardiff City have signed defender Martin John on a one-year contract after the Canadian impressed on trial.

The left-back made his senior debut for home-town club Ottawa Fury, who play in the amateur United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League.

John, 22, who holds a British passport, played for the State University of New York at Buffalo between 2007-8 and impressed recently for Welling United.

"It's great to sign for Cardiff City, the facilities are fantastic," he said.

"Everything about this club is set up for us to be a Premier League side."

John made an immediate debut for the Bluebirds in Wednesday night's home Carling Cup first-round win against Burton Albion.

The youngster is English-born but emigrated early in his life to Canada with his Swiss/Colombian mother, Maria-Elena Sandoz, and Gambian father, Amadou John.

John has also played for the University of Maine Black Bears on a football scholarship and played reserve-team football in Argentina last season.
