Cardiff City complete Jason Koumas loan move

Cardiff City have completed the season-long loan switch of former Wales midfielder Jason Koumas from Premier League Wigan Athletic.

The 30-year-old made just six starts for Roberto Martinez's team last season and the Wigan boss had previously admitted Koumas was available on loan.

And the 34-times capped Welshman has returned to Cardiff where he enjoyed a loan spell in the 2005/06 season.

He registered with the Football League when their transfer ban was lifted.

"It's great to be back and it feels like it's been a long time coming - I can't wait to get started now," said Koumas.

"I've had a bit of a tough time at Wigan, especially over the last few months. I was injured last season and was out of the picture for some time; things had gone a bit stale there for me and I wanted a change.

"I told Wigan that there was only one place I wanted to go and that was back to Cardiff City."

The Football League imposed the embargo on last season's Championship play-off finalists after failing to lodge their end-of-year accounts and non-payment of fees to the management brokers of defender Mark Hudson's £1m transfer from Charlton Athletic to Cardiff last summer.

But the Bluebirds have seemingly satisfied the football authorities by clearing the remainder of "their football debts" so the transfer embargo has been lifted.

Cardiff wanted sanction lifted quickly so they could register playmaker Koumas and fellow summer arrivals Danny Drinkwater and Tom Heaton in time for their Championship opener against Sheffield United on Sunday.

Manchester United loan signing Drinkwater and goalkeeper Heaton, who has also arrived from Old Trafford, are expected to be in Dave Jones' squad to play the Blades at the Cardiff City Stadium.

While Koumas' deal, agreed when he was in Cardiff on Wednesday, with the Welsh club has been completed but the 30-year-old will not feature on Sunday as he is not yet match-fit as he recovers from knee surgery.

"We are pleased to have agreed terms with Wigan and to welcome Jason back to Cardiff City," said Cardiff chief executive Gethin Jenkins

Koumas quickly established himself as a fans' favourite in his previous spell in south Wales when the mercurial midfielder scored 13 goals in 44 starts for Dave Jones' men.

He won the club's Player of the Year award and was honoured in the Championship's PFA team of the season.

Koumas enjoyed his stay at Ninian Park so much so that he often spoke publicly about his hope to remain at Cardiff on a permanent basis and not return to parent club West Bromwich Albion.

But Cardiff and West Brom failed to agree a transfer fee even though Koumas effectively went on strike as he tried to force the transfer through.

Koumas, though, performed a U-turn to remain at the Hawthorns and impressed as he won the Football League Player of the Year award and was named in the 2006/07 PFA Championship team of the year again.

But Wigan splashed out £5.3m on Koumas in July 2007 but he failed to live up to his transfer fee as injuries frustrated his stay at the JD Stadium.

The Welshman also retired from international football in September 2009 at the age of just 29 after scoring 10 goals in just 34 caps over an eight-year international period.

Koumas, who started his career at Tranmere Rovers before his 2002 switch to West Brom, has often been criticised of not fulfilling his enormous potential but Cardiff hope that the Wrexham-born player can prove some of the doubters wrong this season.

Koumas is expected to fill the midfield void in Jones' team following Wales international Joe Ledley's free summer transfer to Glasgow Celtic.
