Ledley backing Hudson leadership

New Cardiff City skipper Mark Hudson insists Joe Ledley has given him his backing after the Wales midfielder was stripped of the Bluebirds captaincy.

Cardiff manager Dave Jones replaced Ledley as captain due to the ongoing contract stalemate as the 22-year-old refuses to sign a new Cardiff deal.

Hudson admits: "Joe has dealt with it brilliantly. He is young and I'm sure he'll be captain for many years.

"And as long as he can help me with my duties, it is brilliant."

Ledley captained Wales in their 2-1 midweek friendly defeat in Montenegro on Wednesday.

But he was relieved of his duties prior to the start of the new campaign with hometown-club Cardiff despite a successful start as captain, leading the Bluebirds to an 11-match unbeaten run in the Championship.

He led by example as he inspired Cardiff to the brink of the play-offs, losing out on a top-six finish in the final 15 minutes of the season due to a late final-day defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

But Cardiff-fan Ledley, who has been at the club since the age of nine, has only one year left on his Cardiff contract.

His future remains uncertain with top-flight clubs such as Everton, Stoke City, Hull City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United all linked with him.

Jones appointed experienced centre-back Hudson as his on-the-field leader after the 27-year-old captained Crystal Palace and previous club Charlton Athletic.

The £1m summer signing said: "He has not got a problem at all.

"Joe led Wales the other day and to be international captain is a brilliant honour.

"I'm also honoured to be Cardiff City captain as I feel we have an amazing squad with lots of goals in us and as long as we can stay solid at the back, we can do well in the league."

Jones hopes Ledley shows the maturity to continue to lead as well as assist new captain Hudson.

"He is still part of the captaincy role and still helps Hudson out," said boss Jones.

"I'd have no problems if Hudson was injured as Joe would take that armband - but he has to sign that contract."
