Former Juventus striker Vincent Pericard has joined Championship club Cardiff City on trial.

The 26-year-old Frenchman is a free agent following his release from Premier League club Stoke City has been training with the Bluebirds.

Should a Premier League club swoop for Ross McCormack, Pericard could be a possible replacement for the Scotsman.

Pericard came off the substitutes bench for Cardiff in their 2-0 friendly defeat by Valencia on Saturday.

He made an almost instant impact as he won Cardiff a penalty after being fouled by Valencia's Hedwiges Maduro but Ross McCormack missed the spot-kick as the Spanish giants earned the pre-season win.

But the Cameroon-born striker scored just four goals in 45 games in all competitions during his three years at Stoke and was farmed out on loan to both Southampton and then Millwall.

Pericard started his career at French club St Etienne before Italian giants Juventus snapped up the promising youngster.

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp signed the French under-21 international initially on loan during the 2002-2003 season.

He impressed so much that Redknapp signed him on a permanent deal in the summer of 2003.

But in an injury-plagued three years at Fratton Park - where he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury - Pericard failed to score in his 14 outings.

He was loaned out to Sheffield United and Plymouth Argyle before Portsmouth released him in 2006 and Stoke boss Tony Pulis made Pericard his first signing on a three-year deal.

Pericard endured a controversial spell at the Britannia Stadium as he was sentenced to four months in prison in August 2007 for lying over a speeding conviction.

Pericard was let out early with an electronic tag but was subsequently re-arrested in the October after problems with the device.

Pericard had unsuccessful loan spells at Millwall and Southampton and has not scored a league goal since October 2006.

Portsmouth have made an enquiry about McCormack - Cardiff's top-scorer last season - while fellow Premier League side Hull City have also been linked with McCormack.
