Dave Jones says Eddie Johnson must grab his opportunity

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones has told striker Eddie Johnson he must seize his opportunity if given it against Barnsley at Ninian Park on Tuesday.

Johnson has not scored for the club and Jones said: "He might get his chance and he's got to grab it."

Midfielder Gavin Rae has also failed to score this season and admitted: "I'm absolutely devastated."

Jones says Cardiff should not panic in the wake of their 1-0 defeat at Southampton on Saturday.

However, Jones may re-jig his team in the wake of that setback, allowing Johnson to make his mark, but with Jones warning: "He's got to pull up a few trees.

"He's here to score goals and he hasn't. There's no hiding place for anybody in football and it's no good not talking about it."

Rae is also conscious of the need to get on the score sheet, adding: "I think the minimum I've got for any season is four. If I can get four between now and the end of the season I'll be buzzing."

While Jones is keen for his players to return to form, he insists there has been an unjustifiable reaction to their defeat at St Mary's.

"Because we lost on Saturday, it's as if it's the end of the world," said Jones.

"And that's what you've got to be careful of - that nobody starts to panic, nobody starts hammering away that we've lost a football match.

"I remember when we lost against Swansea in the Cup, we'd gone 14 games without losing, we lose a game and then the whole world's caved in.

"Put it into perspective a little bit. The lads have done absolutely brilliantly to get where they were.

After a loss you can do anything you want because the players have no comeback

"We know we let ourselves down on Saturday, but we have to dust ourselves down and get ready for the next one."

The Bluebirds dropped to seventh following that defeat, one place below the play-off zone.

Jones added: "It's as if we've been hit by a sledgehammer and everybody will get nervous and everything else and let's relax and keep it going.

"[But] we're in a fantastic position, we've worked hard to get there and one loss isn't going to finish us."

However, along with the possibility of American Johnson being called up, Jones says there may be other changes.

"After a loss you can do anything you want because the players have no comeback, certainly after a poor performance, but if we make changes it will be because that's the team we think will get us a result.

"Others have got to step up to the plate if they get the opportunity.

"Players will moan and groan because they are not playing and when they get that opportunity they have to grab it."
