Bluebirds backing Parry decision

Paul Parry in action against Bristol City
Parry returned to Cardiff duty after his international retirement

Captain Darren Purse said after the 0-0 draw with Bristol City that Cardiff's players and fans will stand by Paul Parry over his shock Wales retirement.

With rumours flying of a public bust-up between Wales manager John Toshack and Cardiff boss Dave Jones, Purse says he is keen to focus on the club's needs.

"What's done is done, it was down to Paul and the decision he has made does not interfere with Cardiff," he said.

"With the pressure on him Paul was fantastic and the fans responded."

Jones said that Parry, 28, had been "vilified and crucified" for his decision to retire from international duty two days before Wales' 2-1 loss to Russia in Moscow, a match that he would have started.

A statement of support for Parry published on the Cardiff website on the day of the Russia game is believed to have angered Toshack.

"We need to draw a line under this," said Jones, after the Severnside derby draw.

"Paul should now be judged on the way he plays for Cardiff."

Purse added: "Paul worked really hard for the lads and deserved his round of applause from the fans when he came off."

Meanwhile, Purse was delighted that the point against the Robins had raised his side five places to seventh in the Championship.

606: DEBATE
"It's surprising how high we are as we've only won one game in the league," the centre-back told BBC Sport Wales.

"But the unbeaten run is good and confidence is fantastic, if we can take that into the game at Barnsley on Tuesday and get another win everything would be rosy.

"Bristol City are going to be near the top at the end of the season, so we were pleased with a point and a second successive clean sheet.

"We're in a great position, one we would have taken at the start of the season, and now it's about starting to win and climb the table.

"The 20,000 crowd against Bristol was fantastic, and if they keep turning out like that this year they can push us to the play-offs and, hopefully, beyond."
