Smith 'silent' on Loovens - Jones

Dave Jones insists he has not heard from Rangers boss Walter Smith about signing Cardiff City's Glenn Loovens.

Scottish giants Rangers are tracking the 3m-rated Dutch defender who has one-year left on his Ninian Park deal.

But Jones told BBC Sport: "I have not spoken to Walter, the only dialogue I've had with Rangers was to get one of their players."

The FA Cup finalists were chasing Rangers striker Kris Boyd but are now linked to Ibrox frontman Daniel Cousin.

Newspaper reports claimed Rangers chief Executive Martin Bain has opened talks with Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale to arrange the transfer that would allow the 24-year-old centre-back sign before the 7 August Champions League registration deadline.

It was also claimed the Championship club would swap Loovens for 31-year-old Cousin.

But a statement on the Cardiff City website read: "Despite media speculation, there are no ongoing discussions with Glasgow Rangers Football Club for Glenn Loovens to move to Ibrox in exchange for any Glasgow Rangers players coming to Ninian Park."

Loovens' performances alongside Roger Johnson in defence were hailed as Cardiff marched to the FA Cup final against Portsmouth at Wembley.

Rangers, Premier League big-spenders Fulham and Dutch giants Ajax, who Cardiff play in a pre-season friendly on Friday, are apparently interested in the former Feyenoord trainee.

"If he stays then fantastic," said Jones.

"But if he goes, I'll have to replace him - that's football.

"I've had a conversation with Glenn and what I would say is there's an awful lot of football gossip that doesn't always come true.

"I have not spoken to Walter and I believe he made comments last night saying we are possibly changing our mind.

"But if he were to change our mind, there would have had to be dialogue in the first place.

"The only one not to sign a new contract is Glenn and he has a year left.

"All the other lads like Kevin McNaughton, Roger Johnson, Paul Parry and Joe Ledley have signed new long-term deals."

Loovens, Johnson and Welsh international midfielder Ledley have been heavily linked with moves to the Premier League this summer following Cardiff's FA Cup heroics last summer.

But the only player to leave Ninian Park was teenage wonderkid Aaron Ramsey who joined Arsenal in a 5m deal.

Jones, who controversially released superstar strike-force Robbie Fowler and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, is still searching for strikers as the Cardiff boss needs more fire-power to aid his Premier League promotion bid.

Highly-rated Scottish striker Ross McCormack has signed for Cardiff but Jones missed out on experienced targetman Marcus Bent and American international forward Kenny Cooper.

Jones admits: "It is always frustrating to lose out on any player you were close to getting but we're not the only ones chasing these guys.

"But other teams missed out when we signed Ross McCormack because he was a wanted lad.

"We're still looking for added more strength in depth and want to add another two or three new faces."

Cardiff kick-off the new Championship campaign at home to Southampton on 9 August.
