Summer signing Ross McCormack scored twice as the Bluebirds began their Algarve Cup challenge with victory over Portuguese hosts Guimaraes.
The recruit from Motherwell struck in the 16th and 68th minutes, claiming his first Cardiff goals in the process.
Paul Parry played provider for McCormack's opener which he stroked into the back of the net.
Roger Johnson's diagonal pass gave the Scotsman the chance to twist and turn before hitting the mark.
Cardiff City manager Dave Jones said: "Steve Thompson worked his socks off again and won a lot of balls and Ross fed off that.
"I think he showed all the qualities of being a good player and that's why we went and got him.
"And for the price we got him at, it looks like another steal for us.
"We played some good football and there are one or two things we can improve on. We played a very good team and came off with a good result."
