Leggy McPhail ready for last lap

Stephen McPhail celebrates his goal against Blackpool
McPhail's spectacular opening goal lifted a tired side

Stephen McPhail says Cardiff's tired squad are ready for the final assault on a Cup and play-off double.

"We're in the FA Cup final and five points off the play-offs with a game in hand," said the goal-scoring midfielder after the 3-1 home win over Blackpool.

"We were leggy in the game, but my goal lifted us and at the break (manager) Dave Jones told us to pick it up for 15 to 20 minutes, and that sealed it.

"It's nice to get a day off now, but we'll be ready for Scunthorpe next."

Despite giving his side a tongue-lashing at half-time, Jones was keen to praise his small squad.

"They're tired, but I asked them to go again and they did," Jones told BBC Sport Wales.

"They are fit lads, and I've told them that if they keep going full pelt they won't get injured - it's when you start pulling out of challenegs that you get problems.

"It's been a demanding schedule, but at last we've got a few days to recharge energy levels.

"It wasn't so much the FA Cup semi-final against Barnsley that's made them weary, it's the mental tiredness from an occasion like that.

"We've still got hopes of the play-offs and we'll be ready to go again next Saturday."
