Canvey Island manager Jeff King says players will have to leave so the club can become self-supporting.
King is scaling down his investment after bank rolling the club's rise from the Essex Senior League to the top level of non-league football.
"I imagine players will have to leave and it means the fans will have to rally round," he told BBC Essex.
"We're the 15th ranked non-league club in the country and I don't think people appreciate what we've achieved."
"They don't understand what it takes to compete with the likes of Hereford and Exeter," King continued.
"It's been heartrending to make this decision and I've made lots of good friends.
"I'm not giving the club away but it remains to be seen how much longer I'll be associated, but I'll help it as much as other people do."
