Cambridge United defender Brian Saah has signed a new two-year deal and will captain the club next season.

Manager Martin Ling was keen to keep the 23-year-old after an impressive first season at the Abbey Stadium, in which he played 33 league games.

Saah told the club's website: "Martin has real ambitions to take the club back to where it should be and the fans deserve it to be."

"I am here to play a big part in that and bring success to Cambridge United."

Saah's commitments as club captain mean he will take some off-field responsibilities away from current team captain Paul Carden, although Carden will still skipper the side on the pitch.

The ongoing search for a central midfielder, a wide left and two strikers continues

The former Torquay player had received the contract offer in April, but stated he would not be rushed into making a decision, sparking fears he could be snapped up by another club.

"This is a massive signing for the football club," said Ling.

"It's important for me that a player of his pedigree has chosen to stay with us when there were other clubs interested in him.

"Brian is a big part of the jigsaw and it means my defensive unit is complete."

But Ling added his summer transfer activities would not finish until he had made four more signings.

"The ongoing search for a central midfielder, a wide left and two strikers continues," he said.

Saah will be part of Paul Fairclough's England C side for their International Challenge Trophy match with the Republic of Ireland on 26 May.
