Brabin blames Rolls for U's exit

Cambridge United boss Gary Brabin says he believes chairman George Rolls was the driving force behind his departure from the Abbey.

Brabin was sacked as U's boss on Monday with the club citing a difference of opinion over the playing budget.

Brabin told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I had no issue with any other board or staff member at the club.

"I love Cambridge, the club and the town; I didn't want to leave and was looking forward to next season."

Rolls confirmed on Monday that his relationship with Brabin had deteriorated in recent months, but said money was the cause of the problems.

However Brabin feels his sacking was a decision made solely by Rolls, not the board as a whole.

"I've only received a verbal dismissal from George Rolls and I am yet to receive written confirmation from the rest of the board," added Brabin.

U's vice-chairman Terry Baker told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Gary point-blank told George and I that the football side of the club had nothing to do with us.

"This was countered by us leaving Gary to storm out of the meeting and George then spent the rest of the week trying to make contact with him.

"When George finally caught up with Gary he was treated in a very disrespectful way, which led to Gary leaving the club."

However, Brabin denies he was deliberately avoiding Rolls.

"George had many opportunities to contact me over the past few days before he finally did," he said.
