Phillips aims to end Wembley jinx

Cambridge United striker Lee Phillips hopes to break his personal Wembley jinx in the Blue Square Premier play-off final against Torquay.

Phillips lost the play-off final with Exeter in 2007 and the FA Trophy final with Torquay 12 months ago.

The 28-year-old told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I've managed to get on the score sheet but I've lost both.

"Hopefully that's not a bad omen and it's third time lucky. I'm going there to win it."

Phillips comes up against the side he went to Wembley with last season on Sunday, 17 May and admits he is still close friends with Gulls boss Paul Buckle.

"I'm very good mates with Paul Buckle and we shared a few texts after the game the other day," he said.

"But when it comes to the crunch I'm sure we won't be speaking until one or two days after the game."

It is the third season in a row the former Weymouth man has played at the national stadium, a fact he feels will help prepare him for the size of the occasion.

He said: "From my experience when you get there you are overawed.

I know the atmosphere's going to be electric because we'll take hoards and hoards of fans

"A few of the lads have been there before and they'll know what to expect."

Phillips also feels that the supporters could help settle the big match nerves.

"The fans have been absolutely fantastic with me since I've been here," he said.

"I know the atmosphere's going to be electric because we'll take hoards and hoards of fans."

Meanwhile, defender Dan Gleeson has been called into the England C squad for the upcoming International Challenge Trophy final against Belgium.
