Cambridge part company with Quinn

Cambridge United manager Jimmy Quinn has left the club by mutual consent.

Quinn leaves after guiding the U's to second place in the Blue Square Premier and a play-offs spot last season.

But the season ended in disappointment as Cambridge were beaten 1-0 by Exeter in the final to miss out on promotion to the team that finished fourth.

"We both agreed it was in his interests and the football club's interest if he were to leave the club," chairman Phil Law told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

Quinn joined the U's in September 2006 and eventually guided the club to safety in the Conference following a difficult first season at the helm.

For the 2007/08 season, the former Shrewsbury and Northwich boss rebuilt the squad with Danny Potter, Mark Albrighton and Lee Boylan arriving at the club.

Quinn's new-look side hit the ground running and remained unbeaten for the first 12 games of the new campaign, but despite finishing second, the season ended in Wembley heartbreak.

Quinn is away on holiday in Portugal with his family, and will make a full statement on his return, but Law has admitted results on the pitch were not the decisive factor in his departure.

"Everybody's very grateful for the work that Jim and the team have put in," Law said.

"There are other factors that the manager has taken into account which I know that he wants to explain himself more fully upon his return on Friday."

Eight of the 11 players who started last month's play-off final have now left the club, along with assistant manager Willy Wordsworth and Quinn.

Law said: "I entirely understand that there will be people who are concerned.

"But from my point of view, obviously armed with the knowledge I have stood behind the scenes, then I have to say I am comfortable with everything that's gone on."
