Hughes started every league game for North Queensland Fury last season
Bury boss Richie Barker has made his first signing since being appointed manager, securing centre-back Mark Hughes on a two-year contract.
The 24-year-old former Everton trainee has had previous spells in the Football League at Northampton and Walsall.
He joined Australian A-League side North Queensland Fury in June 2010 but they were wound up because of financial problems in March.
He will join the club after a medical and receiving international clearance.
League One new boys Bury have also confirmed that Richie Branagan, Andrai Jones and Lenell John-Lewis have all signed new 12-month contracts, but expect Kyle Bennett to leave as he is yet to commit to the club.
