Burnley captain Graham Alexander to stay at Turf Moor

Burnley manager Eddie Howe says club captain Graham Alexander will remain part of his plans for next season.

The former Scotland international, who turns 40 in October, had been linked with management jobs this summer at both Bury and Morecambe.

Howe told BBC Radio Lancashire: "As it stands now Graham will be with us for pre-season and next year.

"He's contracted to us for another season. We all know how highly he is thought of."

He added: "I know he was frustrated a little bit by a lack of football towards the end of last season but he had a very good season when you consider he made his 1,000th appearance which was a fantastic achievement."

Burnley have yet to add any new faces to their squad and return to pre-season training on Thursday, but Howe says he is hoping he is not too far away from a breakthrough in the transfer market.

He said: "I'm hopeful there will be new players. I can assure everyone that we're working very hard to get things done but you can't rush these things and I'm sure we'll have the squad in place come kick off."
