Burnley's Clarke Carlisle demands 'positive' boost

Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle believes the club can take a number of positives from their Carling Cup defeat against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The Clarets took their Premier League opponents to extra-time before losing 2-1, but Carlisle says the performance shows what they are capable of.

"We've taken a lot of pride from the match," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"The gaffer [Brian Laws] made six changes but we still produced a performance that warranted more."

Burnley will face their toughest test of the Championship season on Saturday when they visit league leaders Queens Park Rangers.

The Londoners remain the only unbeaten side in the Football League.

"We need to go and make sure we make an equally adept account of ourselves," said Carlisle, who spent four years at Loftus Road.

"They're there to be shot down but every week's a test. Most teams - apart from QPR - are beating each other so why can't it be us who ends their run?

"We've put in some excellent performances although we haven't always got the results we deserve.

"We believe this weekend could be a real kick-start to our season and we want to take the pride and confidence from this result straight into the league."

There will be full commentary from 1500 BST on Saturday on BBC Radio Lancashire.
