Burnley have released captain Steven Caldwell and full-back Stephen Jordan as manager Brian Laws prepares for life in the Championship.

Caldwell, who joined the Clarets from Sunderland in January 2007, has made more than 100 appearances for the club but struggled with injury this season.

Jordan, 28, leaves Turf Moor after three seasons.

Other casualties include goalkeepers Nicky Weaver, Jonathan Lund, midfielder Adam Kay and first-year pro Ben Hoskin.

Caldwell told BBC Radio Lancashire: "It's the end of the road and I'm quite comfortable with that.

"People move on and I just felt that my thoughts and the mangers thoughts weren't moving in the same direction so it's better that I move on.

"I'm ready to leave. I want to leave. I thought I would have been offered some kind of contract but that wasn't to be. It's time for me to move on and try something different."

Burnley have offered new terms to Brian Jensen, Steven Thompson, Robbie Blake and Michael Duff and are awaiting their response.

Player-coach Graham Alexander and central defender Clarke Carlisle have also been offered and signed two-year contracts.
