Burnley have fined midfielder Kevin McDonald for leaving Turf Moor without permission at half-time of Saturday's 6-1 home defeat by Manchester City.

McDonald had been substituted at the break with the Clarets trailing 5-0.

The 21-year-old has apologised for his actions, and told Burnley's website: "I now realise it was naive, disrespectful and totally wrong of me to leave.

"It was a gross misjudgement and instead I should have stayed to support my club and team-mates."

He added: "I acknowledge that I also showed a serious lack of respect to all the fans who were at the ground and who pay good money to watch their team play.

"I would like to apologise to the players, management and supporters and I have accepted my punishment.

"In closing, I would like to reassure all supporters that I am fully committed to helping the team as we fight to stay in the Premier League."

McDonald, a Scottish Under-21 international, joined Burnley for £500,000 from Dundee in June 2008 and has made 15 starts and 10 substitute appearances for the Clarets this season.
