Plymouth assistant John Carver has turned down the opportunity of working as first-team coach under new Burnley boss Brian Laws at Turf Moor.

Carver, 44, who has also worked at Newcastle, Leeds, Luton and Toronto FC, rejected the offer out of loyalty to Plymouth head coach Paul Mariner.

Carver was out of work between April and December before he joined Plymouth.

"The club's board has a five-year plan and I want to be part of that," Carver told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I felt I had to be loyal to Paul for giving me this opportunity," added Carver, who resigned as Toronto's head coach in April, after Plymouth's 3-0 FA Cup defeat at Newcastle.

"In the short-term we have a lot of hard work to keep Plymouth in the Championship."

Speaking after Plymouth's Cup exit, Mariner told BBC Radio Devon that he and Carver have formed a strong relationship.

"John wanted to stay loyal to me, but more importantly he wanted to stay loyal to Plymouth Argyle," said Mariner.

"We've had a bond ever since we've been together.

"I know it's probably difficult for people to imagine, but even though we've only been together for a short period, we've sort of been together for quite a time because of our liaison over in America.

"We love the players, we love the club and we know that something special is starting to happen here and we want to be here for the long haul," Mariner concluded.

Laws was appointed by Burnley as manager on a two-and-a-half-year deal on Wednesday.

His backroom staff already includes former Scunthorpe and Sheffield Wednesday assistant Russ Wilcox, while 38-year-old captain Graham Alexander will take up a new role as player-coach.
