Fletcher eyes more Scotland caps

Fletcher's performances for Hibs have been much praised

Burnley striker Steven Fletcher hopes his move to the English Premier League newcomers will boost his chances of a regular place in the Scotland team.

Fletcher, 22, made the switch from Hibernian on Tuesday for a Clarets record transfer fee of £3m.

"I have been around the squad for a while now and hopefully I can get a few more games under my belt," he said.

"But first of all I have to perform for Burnley and score goals. If I do that I will be delighted."

Fletcher, who has three international caps and one goal to his name, added he felt a certain amount of pressure given the amount of money his new club have paid for him.

But Burnley manager Owen Coyle believes the striker will be able to live up to the price tag.

"Whatever price has been paid, the player didn't pay it. They just have to go and show the ability that brought them to this club," Coyle said.

"Steven will show he is worth more than that kind of money. He is a young man, an international and a proven goal-scorer.

"He leads the line well, he can drop short and can play off the shoulder. He has such a range of assets and attributes.

"Steven is a very accomplished player for someone of such a young age and I am delighted he is here.

After six years with the Scottish Premier League outfit, Fletcher admitted it was a wrench to leave Easter Road.

However, he said the lure of the English top tier was too good to turn down.

"Hibs gave me a great opportunity and I was there since I was 16," he said.

"I would like to thank everyone for all they have done for me. It was hard to leave but I wanted to play in the Premier League.

"As soon as I came to Burnley I knew this was the right move for me.

"Owen Coyle is very enthusiastic, he wants to play football the right way and there is a family feel about the place."

Fletcher scored 52 goals in nearly 190 appearances for Hibs and scored Scotland's winning goal in April's World Cup qualifying match against Iceland at Hampden.

He was also named as young player of the year by both the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football Writers' Association.

Fletcher became Coyle's second signing of Tuesday, Burnley having earlier completed a £500,000 deal with Derby County for defender Tyrone Mears.

On Wednesday, former Newcastle defender David Edgar was also added to the Turf Moor squad.

He is unavailable for the opening game of the season after being sent off as the Tyneside club were relegated in May.

"It was horrible feeling that day and tough to be involved, especially as I have supported the club since I was a boy," Edgar said.

"Newcastle will always be in my heart and coming to Burnley is all about playing football, nothing else."

Meanwhile Coyle is keeping tabs on 18-year-old Hamilton midfielder James McCarthy.

"He is a talented player, as are many I have spoken about," said the Clarets boss.
