Burnley have completed the signing of Derby County defender Tyrone Mears for a fee in the region of £500,000.

Mears, 26, who had a loan spell at Marseille last season, had been linked with Portsmouth but joins the Premier League newcomers on a three-year deal.

"Just hearing what manager Owen Coyle had to say and how he wants to improve me as a player is a major plus," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"But I'm also glad to be back in England and the Premier League."

Mears began his career with Manchester City, making only one substitute appearance in March 2002.

After joining Burnley's local rivals Preston for £200,000 in the same season he went on to score four goals in 82 appearances.

I've spoken to a lot of people and they've all said how well Burnley have done

Following spells at West Ham and Derby, Marseille took Mears on loan in September 2008.

And although the French Ligue 1 runners-up offered him a contract, he decided against staying on the continent for personal reasons.

"It was a fantastic experience but I told them in March that if it was a different time in my life I would've signed.

"The fact my family couldn't move over with me for at least another year was a factor in my decision."

Clarets boss Owen Coyle told the club's website: "He is a player with real pace and we have been looking for that in full-back areas.

"He is hungry, still relatively young and desperate to do well."

Mears is Coyle's first summer signing as Burnley prepare for their first season in the Premier League.

And he admitted the positive feedback he received following the club's promotion helped him make his decision quickly.

"I didn't get to see any games being abroad, but I've spoken to a lot of people and they've all said how well Burnley have done," Mears said.

"It was a fantastic achievement getting into the Premier League and the style of play is really good."
