Christian Kalvenes has become Burnley's fourth signing of the summer after arriving at Turf Moor from Dundee United on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old Norwegian defender has signed a two-year deal with the Clarets after his contract with the Scottish club expired this summer.

"I'm absolutely delighted," manager Owen Coyle told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"He was voted the best left-back in Scotland last year which is a tremendous accolade."

Kalvenes joined Dundee United for 50,000 in time for the start of the 2006-07 season.

We had to move swiftly because there were some big clubs after his services

The Norwegian becomes the latest player to arrive at Turf Moor following the recent acquisitions of Martin Paterson, Kevin McDonald and, subject to a work permit, Peruvian goalkeeper Diego Penny.

"We had to move swiftly because there were some big clubs after his services," said Coyle.

"Even today there was going to be a late bid from a major club but Christian said that he was coming on board."

And the manager feels Kalvenes' experience will be invaluable, particularly among the younger players at Turf Moor.

"He's just turned 31 and is the type of player we needed to help the younger ones that we are bringing in.

"The other attractive thing is that there was no transfer fee but there is no doubting he is quality."
